There is a majestic place from my childhood that remains as special to me now as it did then. I can still see it in my mind's eye, still feel the warm breeze that enveloped me there.

This secret place was made all the more special because it was hidden from the world — accessible only through the private property of a friendly neighbor, who allowed a small community onto his land to reach a crescent-moon beach beyond.

But it wasn't the beach that stands out so vividly in my memory. That little curve of private sand was flanked by houses, and the bay it met was always peppered with boaters. The most majestic part of the journey was the path itself — winding through a quiet stretch of woods connecting the neighbor's land to the shore, its thin dirt trail lined with fragrant honeysuckle. Eventually the woods melted into yellow New England sand, the foliage thinning into rolling dunes covered in high dune grass and rosehips.

Maybe it was the quiet, secret stretch between worlds — a neighborhood and a busy bay. Maybe it was the sweet smell of honeysuckle mingled with whatever piece of fresh fruit I was snacking on along the way. Or maybe it was the anticipation of the glittering ocean beyond. Whatever it was, it felt surreal.

I've been searching for a place like that since I was ten. I've been dreaming about the smell of that warm breeze, the feel of it on my skin, the peace of that momentary walk I took so many times while summering at my grandparents' home.

I can't help but feel it was my glimpse into paradise. The innocence, the quiet splendor, the world waiting just beyond the trees… It's the closest thing I have to imagining the Garden of Eden.
