"Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool." - Isaiah 1:18
The Book of Isaiah is one of the most prophetic books in the Bible, especially within the Old Testament. We see imagery related to Jesus’ birth, identity, ministry, suffering, and death, written approximately 700 years before His coming.
Isaiah 1 is God calling out the sins of the Israelites, through their prophet. They were still worshipping, but they were in rebellion against what is right and good and their nation was spiritually sick. Through this, God called them to repentance and offered radical mercy and forgiveness.
It is important to note that at the time Isaiah was writing, scarlet and crimson were dyes nearly impossible to remove. God is saying: You cannot clean yourselves, but I can. We cannot change the past, but through God’s grace and mercy, we can be restored and walk in righteousness toward the future.
In this passage, God defines genuine repentance as not just confession of sin, but turning outward to compassion, justice, mercy, and righteousness. Isaiah 1:18 is not simply about guilt being removed; it is about a covenant relationship being restored. It is one of the most stunning portraits of God’s heart: perfect justice and unthinkable mercy.
As we light the Advent candles and prepare our hearts for Christmas, we join in the centuries-long anticipation of God’s promised redemption, celebrating the God whose love shines into the darkness.
