prince of peace

“It was You who set all the boundaries of the earth; You made both summer and winter.” - Psalm 74:17 

When I first became a Christian, I encountered joy and inner peace unlike anything I had ever experienced. Since then, I have grown and been transformed and I am still being forged– because, we are, in fact, forged in fire. 

We are transformed through the purifying fire of the Holy Spirit, and we are transformed through the fire of walking in this world. When we experience persecution for our Christianity, or are brought to deep sorrow over the things that bring God sorrow, we are sharing in Christ’s sufferings. “Do not be surprised at the fiery trial… as though something strange were happening to you.” (1 Peter 4:12–13) Though the fruits of the Spirit have given me more patience and joy than I imagined possible before encountering Christ, it is not always easy to be a Christian.

And yet, we cannot lose hope. Truly — we as Christians cannot. It's impossible for us. Our belief in Jesus is itself evidence of the hope that has been placed within us — the hope that lives deep in the new heart God has given us. When the cares of the world start weighing heavily and we begin to feel hopeless, take heart. Our belief in the Prince of Peace is hope. Be still-- focus on Him.

For through Him, we have peace of mind and peace with each other. Through Him, we make peace in this world– even with our enemies. Sometimes, when filled with the Spirit, it is easy for me to pray for my enemies. Other times, depending on my day or mood, I grit my teeth and pray for my enemies. It is in this very struggle that we are actually strongest. It is then that we fight back hardest against the darkness and darkness is forced to retreat. It is then that we acknowledge our hope for the peace that is coming.

Psalm 74:17 emphasizes God's power as the creator of all things, used to remind the listener of God's authority, especially during times of trouble when enemies are blaspheming his name. It serves as a reminder that even when God's people feel abandoned and the enemy appears to be winning, God is the ultimate creator and ruler of all.
