"On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh." - Matthew 2:11

When reflecting on this famous and beautiful Christmas scene, it is important to understand who the Magi were and what significance they held in the ancient world. This story is especially compelling for me, as someone who based her spirituality on astrology, before coming to Christ. The Magi’s journey is a beautiful picture of how God can draw people from every culture to worship Him.

Historically and biblically speaking, the Magi were not kings, though later tradition called them so. The Greek word “Magoi,” from which Magi is derived, translates as wise men, astrologers, or scholars from the East– Persia (Iran) or Babylon (Iraq). These three men would be skilled in astronomy, astrology, divination, and possibly religious study.

In fact, the term Magi originally referred to a caste of Zoroastrian priests from Persia. And the gifts they chose to bestow on the King of Kings had deep cultural and symbolic meaning.Gold, much like today, represented royalty and kingship. Frankincense was a resin used in temple incense, worship, and priesthood, symbolic of Jesus’ priestly role and deity. And myrrh was a perfume and embalming resin, foreshadowing Jesus’ suffering and burial and symbolic of His humanity and sacrifice.

The Magi were the first non-Jews to worship Jesus. Despite being spiritual leaders in their own cultures, and men of wealth, they recognized the authority and deity of Jesus, and bent the knee to worship Him. Their obedience to God in their worship of Jesus reminds us that no one is beyond God’s reach, and all who seek truth can find the King of Kings.
