In Luke Chapter 12, Jesus tells His disciples: “Consider how the wildflowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.”

He uses the imagery of wildflowers to rebuke anxiety and materialism. Two profound truths emerge, as well as an invitation.

The first truth is that worry, or “survival mode,” is a trap that cuts us off from trust in God. Unfortunately, it is one we fall into easily, as we navigate the unpredictable, and often painful, world. But Jesus does not use this moment to shame His followers for experiencing anxiety. Instead, He reminds us that we are God’s most splendid design and He uses the example of the beautiful, free wildflower to call us back into faithful peace.

The second truth is that earthly riches cannot compare to the majesty of God’s design. Not even King Solomon– adorned in royal luxury– could compare to the beauty of a wildflower pushing through the dirt to grow into its God-given splendor. 

What does this mean for us? 

God planted each of us with intention and unique design. Just as wildflowers grow varied and freely, each of us carries our own beauty, gifts, and purpose, but we cannot grow and thrive when we allow ourselves to be choked by the weeds of this world.

So consider this an invitation to let go of comparison, expectation, and fear. Consider it your invitation to bloom – like a wildflower.
